De Warme Winkel is making national and international waves with witty, bold, and intelligent productions on a wide range of themes. They fully plagiarized Café Müller by Pina Bausch in their performance titled De Warme Winkel speelt De Warme Winkel (De Warme Winkel plays De Warme Winkel), challenged traditional repertoire theater during a show by Ivo van Hove in Achterkant, garnered attention with their trilogy on overpopulation, sparked intense debates on (sexual) identity in Lady Chatterley’s Lover, and broke attendance records at the Amsterdamse Bostheater with their production of De Drie Musketiers (The Three Musketeers). In late 2021, they released a feature film of the same name, but radically reworked, in collaboration with BNNVARA and film director Sam de Jong. In the 2021/2022 season, they toured the Netherlands and Belgium with their performance titled Een oprechte ode de Ironie (A Sincere Ode to Irony), in which they shared the stage with reality TV stars from shows like Temptation Island.
During the first lockdown, in the midst of it, we built the Peepshow Palace in Amsterdam, a COVID-proof theater where audiences could watch over 120 performances and concerts in a sanitized private cabin. We have also recently sparked a discussion about the structure of the performing arts landscape by temporarily appropriating the name “toneelgroep Amsterdam,” the former name of the largest theater company in the Netherlands. The artistic core of the group consists of Vincent Rietveld, Ward Weemhoff, and Florian Myjer, but there are also many affiliated members who are part of the DNA of the group.
In May 2022, together with theater collective BOG., we opened the first theater breeding ground in Amsterdam behind Sloterdijk station: De Sloot. It is a workshop for theater makers, a fully equipped black box theater, a smaller venue, three large rehearsal rooms, multiple work studios, and a large café/restaurant.
